Andy Reid may retire if he wins the Super Bowl with the Chiefs and is 'near the end', says ESPN's Se

Andy Reid could retire if he wins the Super Bowl next week with the legendary Kansas City Chiefs coach’s career ‘near the end’, according to an ESPN reporter.

The Chiefs are said to fear Reid could walk away at the end of the season, despite the 65-year-old coach recently insisting he is not considering calling it a day.

Reid was asked about his long-term future at a Chiefs press conference last month and dismissed any suggestions that he will step down in the near future.

But Mike Florio of NBC said on the Zach Gelby show that the Chiefs have Reid’s potential departure ‘on their radar’.

There was also a report last month that Bill Belichick will take up the Chiefs job if Reid does decide to bring his coaching career to an end.

But ESPN’s Sean McDonough admits ‘where there’s smoke, there’s fire’ and admitted he wouldn’t be surprised if Reid did retire.

He told The Greg Hill Show on 93.7 WEEI Boston: ‘There was some talk about (the rumors), not a lot.

‘It certainly didn’t come across as imminent, but where there’s smoke, there’s fire, too. I trust Adam Schefter.

‘It wouldn’t surprise me if Andy is considering it; I mean, he’s definitely toward the end of his career.

‘I kinda believe in going out on top, so if he were to win and he was pondering it, I wonder if it might compel him to be more likely to retire and go out with a Super Bowl championship.

‘Whether Bill winds up there or not, wow, that would be a lot. I would guess that would not happen, but Schefty’s plugged in, that’s for sure. So, who knows.’

He won the Super Bowl last season and despite a less consistent campaign this time around, the Chiefs beat the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 to win the AFC Championship game last Sunday.

When Reid, affectionately nicknamed ‘Big Red’ in the NFL, was asked if he’ll retire last month, he said: ‘I haven’t even thought about that. I’m thinking about one thing (the next game).

‘I figured that would come up when you guys were asking these questions because I’m old but, not that old.’

Reid has been head coach of the Chiefs since 2013 and has two Super Bowl titles to his name from his time in Kansas City. Before his time in Kansas City, Reid was coach at the Philadelphia Eagles.

Belichick, the second-winningest coach in NFL history is currently available after ending his reign with the New England Patriots in January.

But after being snubbed by the Atlanta Falcons for their head coach vacancy the chances of seeing him back in the league next season are slim.

Belichick had interviewed twice with Atlanta but they opted to hire Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris instead.
