Unstoppable newborn poses with IUD that failed his mom

The odds of you being born — you specifically — are 1 in 10 to the power of 2,685,000, a scientist estimated.

And one baby boy in Vietnam has demonstrated just how hard he fought to be that one.

At the Hai Phong International Hospital last month, a newborn was delivered despite the intrauterine device his mother used in order to prevent pregnancy.

On July 1, an English-language Vietnamese news site, VNExpress International, reported that the failed contraceptive came out from the mother’s uterus alongside her newborn son. The baby then apparently took hold of the device in his nascent hands.

That’s when doctors — of course — grabbed a camera to document the moment for the social media masses.

“After delivery, I thought him holding the device was interesting, so I took a picture. I never thought it would receive so much attention,” said Tran Viet Phuong, head of an obstetrics department at the hospital.

Images showing the brand-new baby, eyes still shut and grasping the IUD, were posted to the hospital’s public Facebook page and have been liked and shared more than 4,000 times. The story has since gone viral globally after it was picked up by international news outlets, such as Univision Noticias, which featured the story on its Instagram to the tune of 65,000 likes.

According to her doctors, the unnamed 34-year-old mother had the device inserted two years ago. About eight months ago, she found out that the “miracle of life” had bypassed the IUD.

Her son was born on June 30, weighing just over 7 pounds.

IUDs are said to be 99% effective and last for years if properly functioning. Phuong suggests that the IUD may have shifted after insertion, thus impacting its contraceptive capabilities.

Rarely, the devices dislodge from the womb and travel throughout the body. Such was the case with one Ohio mother who discovered the IUD she had implanted 11 years prior had found its way into her abdominal cavity.
